THE DIMINISHED VALUE

WHAT IS DIMINISHED VALUE?

WHAT IS DIMINISHED VALUE?

Diminished Value or Diminution in Value is defined as that portion of a damaged vehicle’s Pre-Loss Value that cannot be restored through the repair process.

LEVELS OF DIMINISHED VALUE

LEVELS OF DIMINISHED VALUE

Inherent Diminished Value

The amount by which the resale value of a repaired vehicle has been reduced solely as a result of the vehicle now having a damage history.

This history decreases the overall market value of the vehicle. It does not have anything to do with the claim or the repair related diminished value.

Immediate Diminished Value

Immediate Diminished Value is the difference in resale value of a vehicle immediately before an accident and prior to repair.

When resolving property damage claims inherent diminished value and repair related diminished values are normally used.

Repair Related Diminished Value

The loss of value of the vehicle as a result of improper collision repair.

This is an additional claim to the claim for inherent Diminished Value.

uncover any improper collision or mechanical

repairs that may affect the safety of your vehicle and could put you at risk.

To explain, we have listed the most common

collision repair findings and the effect it may have on your vehicle.

True Pre-Loss Condition is when the vehicle has been repaired to pre-loss condition in all categories related to function, appearance, safety and warranty preservation.

  • All damaged parts were replaced with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts obtained from the Manufacturer.
  • OEM Parts were replaced under the guidelines of Factory Approved and documented procedures.
  • No imitation parts were used in the repair.
  • No reconditioned or remanufactured parts were used.
  • Materials used are equal to the original and approved by the manufacturer.
  • The condition of value relates to compensation for the loss in market re-sell value of the vehicle (inherent diminished value).
  • The vehicle has been examined by a Professional and finds every effort has been made to eliminate flaws or defects related to the damage.

Insurance Dominated Typical Collision Repair means the repairers may have used a mixture of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts from sources other than the OEM called imitation or after-market parts.

  • The parts may have been used salvage parts that were untested or history verified.
  • Areas of the body on the vehicle may have been repaired using plastic auto body filler material.
  • These typical shop procedures and materials were used in the repair WITHOUT consulting the manufacturer guidelines.
  • This type of repair may be controlled by the Insurance Company in order to save money.
  • The body shop could have been instructed on what parts the Insurance Company will pay for rather it’s OEM or Used at the time of repair.

Repaired to the “Best of Human Ability”means the repairers followed the most current documented manufacturer specifications, utilizing repair equipment and techniques approved by the manufacturer at the time of repair. The use of ROBOTICS WAS NOT used in the repair of the vehicle or that the vehicle WAS NOT subjected to paint dipping or baking temperatures of 400+ degrees.

  • No parts replaced were used or reconditioned.
  • Materials used were equal to original and approved for use by the manufacturer.
  • The evidence of the repair exists, but identifying it requires a trained expert and dis-assembly of parts.

Industry Sub-Standard-Cut-Rate-Repair (Most Common) happens when repairers use salvage parts, non-oem imitation parts, excessive body plastic repair material, limited materials with regard to coatings, caulking or sealers.

  • In providing this minimum level of repair, the technicians may have been unsupervised and no quality control measures were used.
  • This repairer is either inexperienced or is willing to risk their reputation on a cut-rate repair.
  • They believe the average untrained consumer will NOT notice the visible flaws.

Poorly Repaired – Unsafe to Drive is a repair that is below “Sub-Standard and Cut-Rate”. Repairers followed no factory recommended repair data.

  • For this to happen, the insurance company specified imitation parts and the repairer agreed to use them without protest in the repair.
  • These parts have been determined to be inferior to OEM parts in many respects.
  • These parts WILL void factory warranties.
  • Imitation parts have been found not to be of “Like Kind and Quality” in fit, finish, warranty and performance. As a result, using them may cause additional loss of value and additional potential safety hazards.
  • The paintwork is visibly flawed and clearly has not been restored.
